Starboard gate stanchion for 2005 C350

Post by belladonna »

Hello - I broke the weld on this stanchion last night trying to get into a slip during a TS. Has anyone tried to repair this weld with J-B WELD or something similar? I really don't want to remove the stanchion unless absolutely necessary. Catalina Direct sells a replacement stanchion but it's for the Mark II only. Any advice or direction will be greatly appreciated. Thank.

Jim,

I would consider lifelines/stanchions a safety item.

Being stainless steel, I would remove it and take it to someone who welds stainless steel unless it is too bent to be brought back to OE condition.

Should be able to find someone in your Chesapeake Bay area.

You might also try these guys-- it is my understanding that they bought a bunch of Catalina excess inventory:

Jim - how about calling Garhauer - (800) 959-SAIL. They might have been Catalina’s supplier. I’ve found them to be very helpful and their products reasonably priced. I understand your reluctance in removing the stanchion but I must cast another NAY vote for J B WELD.

Well I just did the same exact thing… what are the odds that 2 people within hours who have a 2005 350…. I had seen the weld was failing a few weeks ago but tonight coming into the dock let’s just say I had to step on it as my kids refused to listen to the captain during docking. I’m glad you flagged catalinadirect part is for a Mark II I don’t see that mentioned anywhere but was going to measure tomorrow to see if their part fits. I might give them a call tomorrow as well. If you figure something out let me know and I will do the same.

Jim: there is a fellow in deltaville who can weld stainless steel, I think. Wes Summerfield. If I can get his phone number I will send it to you but you may be able to track him down via some of the boatyards. Steve Montgomery

Thanx guys for your very informative suggestions and ideas. Turns out my marina, Regent Point Marina & Boatyard, has a SS welding machine and has used it on stanchion bases with good success before. I'm going to try that first before I go through the pain and effort of removing the galley cabinets, microwave and AC duct. Does anyone know if the 2 deck screws and the main stanchion bolt can be loosened and then retightened without the interior nuts breaking loose? I will post the results of this endeavor and will appreciate any further information.
Thanx, Jim
