Replacing Florescent Light in Head

Has anyone replaced the Florescent light in the head? I'm looking at several options in an strip-LED but was wondering what anyone else has done. The current fixture is 27" long, but I doubt I really need that much length. A shorter fixture would probably require covering the exsisting mounting holes. It would be nice to have the wiring protrude through the back mounting surface so that I could cover up the ugly hole in the deck head. Most of the fixtures I've seen have the wiring coming out of the end.
