Re: Fridge Compressor -Replacement
I did not replace my compressor. i added a second one (sat on top of the first in an aluminium frame). I then connected this to a new evap plate in the fridge compt and removed the spillover fan and blocked the holes. I used the same Danfoss BD50 compressor as my original though selected the 12/240v...

Re: De-lamination of veneer on forward bulkhead wall in salon.
It did not work for me. Couldn't get it to stick very well. I cut the veneer at the top and bottom of the bulkhead (along the line at the black caulking) which reduced the pressure on the veneer. I was then able to peel it back and spray 3m adhesive in there and reset it. Looks great and has been st...

Re: Bypass galvinic systems
I'm still broken down and green turtle cay Bahamas. Engine now working by jumping the hot side of the duel pump and elimination the wire from the key switch. I still don't know why there are two wires coming into the one positive side of the pump. The two wires are part of the engine protection sys...

Friends Boat dismasted
Hi all, A friend of mine recently bought a 2001 42' production boat (type withheld to avoid that discussion). A survey from a previous time was used (two years old). The survey pointed out some of the usual errors but did not identify any show stoppers. Upon departing Sydney for the transit north in...

Re: Travelling Australia to Florida
Many thanks for the offer. Got what I needed at Westmarine Sarasota. Great stores but as everyone comments - not cheap. Off on the cruise tomorrow. Look forward to seeing some Catalinas sailing or in and around the Caribbean Islands.

Re: Travelling Australia to Florida
Apologies for sullying the reputation of the forum by travelling by cruise ship. Thanks for the replies. Trying do avoid Amazon as the shipping costs are prohibitive and I have plenty of luggage allowance.

Travelling Australia to Florida
What? Yes my wife and I are flying into Sarasota on 24 February to link up with some (non-sailing) friends. We are in Sarasota for a few days then driving over to FT Lauderdale for a Princess cruise through the Caribbean - yeah I know. Now to my question, I would like to take the opportunity to pick...

Re: Mystery Leak
As someone who has replaced that bracket after it fractured, I think the leak is from somewhere higher up the engine block. Have you examined all sources above that point?

Re: Merits of radar
Two questions for you:
Do you get fog there?
Do you plan to sail at night?
If so you are better off with radar, if and only if, you are going to use it constantly during those times.
If I put my tin foil hat on, it will come in handy for radar fixing when they turn the GPS off when the war starts.

Re: Lithium Batteries
I went down this route about six months ago. I removed my 2x100ah AGM house batteries and replaced them with 2 x 200ah Victron superpack lifepo4s. I did not even attempt to use my OEM 55amp engine alternator to charge the batteries. I connected it directly to the starter battery and installed a Vict...

Re: Cutlass Bearing
As an added bonus, here is a picture of my new bearing installed in July this year. With a one inch shaft you can figure out how far mine sticks out. Also a clear shot of the retaining grub screw when removing the old bearing as this is usually painted over.

Engine Air Supply pipe wrap-around Prop shaft!
Hi all, Wasn't really sure how to title this episode on our boat so I will simply explain as I go. We hauled out in July 2021 and replaced the engine damper plate, the PSS shaft seal, the prop and the cutlass (not a cutlass as it's a brand but you know what I mean) bearing among other things. After ...

Re: Full cleat?
To double up a cleat with the eyes of a line it should be easy. Learn to do what is called “ dipping the eye” (Navy speak). Put the the first eye on the cleat then with the second eye, before you put it on the cleat pass it underneath and up through the eye of the first line before putting it over t...

Hookah Gear
Hi all, Wondering if anybody has any recommendations on Hookah gear? Do you use a tank and hose or some sort of 12v/120v/240v deck mounted or floating equipment. I appreciate a lot of people in the US have someone dive on their hull to clean it. I prefer the DIY approach and living in the tropics in...

Thanks Joe appreciate the advice. Did run a hose through the vent from the outside. Does seem to be okay. Have also tried operating with tank pump out cap removed and get the problem.

Re: Replace discharge Pipe from Head
David, Have a look at the “replacing raritan with sea era” thread. It’s fairly straightforward, I got the old discharge pipe off using a radiator hose pulling tool and no panel removing etc was required. There are also comments about white sanitation hose vs heavier hose. I assumed you meant replac...

Replace discharge Pipe from Head
Hi all, I am about to tackle the issue of replacing the joker valve and discharge pipe from the head to the top of the holding tank. The pipe seems to attach directly to the top of the holding tank somewhere in the centre. (I cannot get my hand up there to confirm where it connects.) My question is ...

Thanks Ken, I was hoping that was the case and I unreservedly withdraw the crack about the Monday morning install :D . I should have been convinced when last year I added an extra spinlock clutch in front of the electric winch and discovered the embedded backing plate when I removed the clam cleat t...

Rudder Bearings Replacement and Availability
Hi all, We have just had Sea Lanes on the hard stand for two weeks for a keel repair after grounding and some new rudder bearings. It turned into a bit of lengthy process and what follows is a long, detailed insight: Firstly the keel; the solid nature of the lead keel made it a simple affair to gent...
