Re: Prop replacement
I finally had some time to gather performance data for the Gori 15x10 folding prop that we installed on The Best of Times. I am very pleased with the performance of the Gori prop. Essentially, our speed over ground increased a 1 to 1.5 knots at 2250 RPM versus the original 14x10 M3 prop. Prior to re...

Re: Anti-siphon valve on engine
From the comments above, apparently earlier models of the 350 did not have the anti-siphon valve nor a dedicated cooling line for the PSS. Catalina apparently sent out an upgrade 'kit' for owners. Later models that I have seen all have a dedicated cooling line for the PSS with it's own dedicated sea...

Re: Stanchion
I finally determined the large nut is a 3/4" hex. I needed to heat it with a heat gun to soften the 4200 in the threads so that I could turn it with an open end wrench.

Re: Anti-siphon valve on engine
Brett, Why would there be an anti-siphon loop on the PSS cooling line? Our PSS cooling line is just a short small hose from the seacock directly to the PSS collar. The PSS line has it's own dedicated seacock separate from the engine seacock. While we're talking about the anti-siphon valve, If I unde...

Re: fuel leak, engine bilge
John, By 'bilge' I assume you mean the pan directly beneath the engine. We have had maybe a 1/2 teaspoon of anti-freeze accumulate in this area as the engine cools. I found it to be coming from the weep hole under the pulley of the fresh water pump (not the raw water pump). The fresh water pump is t...

Re: Stanchion
Jeff, I hadn't thought about a ratcheting box end wrench. I'll take a look at that option. I believe you are close regarding the size. The Catalina Direct site says the through bolt is 1/2" which would make the nut 7/8" or about 22mm. Now that I have some idea of the size maybe I can set a...

Stanchion
Does anyone have any idea what size the large lifeline stanchion nut is? The weld has broken loose at the bottom on the stanchion and I want to have it repaired. Luckily it is one of the stanchions that you have some access to and I have cut away some of the paneling to be able to get to the nut, bu...

Re: Cost to replace dodger, bimini snd filler
We are in the process of replacing our Bimini, and dodger. No filler as Bimini is one-piece roughly 9' x 10'. Quote was $3,000. That may increase as we added a full lined cover for the dodger. We are in the Tampa Bay area, so when completed in the next week or so, you could send me a PM and you are ...

Under Helm and Rudder Maintenance
I've dismantled the access panel under the helm and the aft cockpit locker in order to run the wiring for a new depth transducer. While I have everything apart and have easy access, is there any other routine maintenance I should be doing in this area. I saw the article Ken posted about Edson Steeri...

Re: Erratic Depth Readings
Thanks Ken, That was going to be my next place to poke around. But, that is going to have to wait. Haul out is today. We have converted the aft cabin into the aft 'garage' with lots of storage and removable shelving. So I figure it may take me a day to unload the aft garage, and get access to the fu...

Re: Erratic Depth Readings
I poked around a little without dismantling anything and I can't see anything that appears to look like a transducer cable anywhere along a likely path. There is no visibility behind the head. There doesn't appear to be anything under the head sink where some other wiring runs. I don't see anything ...

Re: Erratic Depth Readings
I tied a messenger line to the end of the old wire at the back of the instrument display and pulled that down to the bilge Where in the bilge? Somewhere near the transom? Did you access that area via the panel on the ceiling of the aft cabin, or through the lockers in the cockpit (I.e. above hot wa...

Re: Erratic Depth Readings
OK, I bought a new depth transducer, plugged it in and dangled it over the transom. I slowly lowered it into the water and depth readings were accurate all the way down. So now its time to install it. Haul out is next week. I plan to cut the wire to the old transducer, then install the new transduce...

Re: Newbie heads out
So Many questions . . . Engine running rough at low rpm in gear but smooth as silk at 1000. What do you call "low RPM"? Idle speed for the engine should be around 1,000 RPM. If set lower than that, it will most definitely run rough. It now overheats under heavy load. Sudden engine overheat...

Raw Water Strainer Mesh Size
I and several fellow boaters (C350 and C355) have noticed that the raw water pumps (Sherwood, Oberdorfer, Johnson (on the 355)), all seem to start leaking at the shaft seals every couple years or 400-500 engine hours. Depco says the sand and dirt in the water around the west coast of Florida, just e...

Re: Oberdorfer N202M-908 Raw Water Pump Installation
Having installed the Oberdorfer pump for about 2-1/2 years, I reinstalled my old Sherwood pump. Nothing particularly wrong with the Oberdorfer, but it only seems to last about 18-24 months before the shaft seals start leaking. Two rebuilds in 2-1/2 years. Both of them the shaft was scored, so it als...

Re: Newbie heads out
From St. James City to Ft. Myers Beach Mooring Field, you need to be aware of the tidal current cruising the 'Miserable Mile' of the ICW (roughly from green marker 9 east of St. James City to Green marker 3A). If you happen to transit this stretch during a strong tidal flow, the tidal flow will crea...

Re: Prop replacement
I believe I have settled on going with the Gori prop. Its Overdrive (OD) mode supports my logic that being slightly over-propped is not a bad thing as long as you operate at reduced RPMs while in OD. Basically, the Gori prop with OD almost acts like a second transmission. By allowing the blades to b...
