Boom Vang Adjustment

My 2005 350 (HN330) has a "vang" that seems to be nothing more than one aluminum tube inside another looking very much like a large car "shock absorber". Is there some way to adjust the length of this tube for sail trim or is just rigid? I guess I don't understand it all!

I will assume that you have the in-mast furler. This vang is adjustable. You turn it to extend or retract. It is not for sail adjustment rather, it is used to make sure that your sail furls and un-furls properly. For instance if you notice that you cannot unfurl your sail all the way, it is most likely binding at the top. Extend the boom vang, until the pressure at the top of the mast, where the sail furls around the inside tube, can be relaxed.
