Dometic, or MarinAire?

Post by ElizabethG »

Hi All,

For years, my Cruisair SXR16 (16K BTU) AC/Heat has had a screeching bearing in the compressor. Since it still worked, I decided to run it until it died. Well, that day has come, the compressor has seized up. Not being the original owner, I believe it was original to the boat, or 20 years old...may it rest in peace.

My unit is mounted in the large, starboard cockpit locker next to the wall in the galley. In the galley, just above the top refrigerator door, are the intake and output vents.

I'd like to mount the new unit in the same area.

The market for these 16K BTU units seems to be dominated by Dometic and MarinAire with Dometic being the larger company. Each company appears to have a similar physical and BTU size unit that should work. The Dometic unit is around $2.5K and the MarinAire around $2K.

I've seen mixed quality reviews on the Dometic units and there is not a lot of info on the MarinAire quality.

So, I'm looking for recommendations especially if you have replaced your original Cruisair unit, which, btw, was bought out by Dometic years ago.

Since my unit lasted for 20 years, I'm spoiled. I'm looking for something that is well built and will last more than a couple of years...I know, good luck with that...

Thanks,

Bill

We replaced ours last year with a Dometic.
Very happy with it. Dometic supports the Cruisair controls (Thermostat), so we did not need to replace this.
The pan is plastic / fiberglass, so no rust. The unit we purchased was a perfect fit. We did need to drill new mounting holes.

We went thru a dealer in Annapolis that offered a discount for cash payment.
About a 3 hour job to replace.

DCMason,

Thanks for the reply!

Do you remember the model # you went with?

I've been looking at the model ECD16K-410A, new p/n 9108732755, old p/n 207500316.

Thanks,

Bill
