Catalina 350 International Association

I noticed my (I think original 2005) LPG solenoid gets significantly warm - at the limit of tolerable temperature to touch and hold - when in use. Everything is functioning correctly as far as I can tell other than this question about the temperature. This must mean a meaningful amount of current is flowing through it. Is that normal? It could be, based on my limited understanding of electrics, since the electromagnet may need to be continuously active to hold the valve open - but then again it did surprise me and I would not want to take any chances around propane. Should be a fairly easy swap out and I see there is a newer model solenoid on catalina direct intended for this replacement.

Hi John,
I have same valve, it gets "warm" when running but certainly not more than one might expect. If yours is actually hot I would be changing it over sooner rather than later. It should be a fairly standard gas fitting I would have thought, but I haven't checked.

Warm to the touch is fine. But too hot to keep your hand on is too hot. Change it out.
I keep a $2.59 fitting on my boat as a back up to the solenoid. It's a male both ends brass connector from Home Depot. If your solenoid were to go out (yes, I've had this happen) his connector would replace the solenoid. At this point though you'd have to manually turn on and off the gas. And, as Bill suggested, have a brass "work around" if the solenoid should fail at a time that getting a replacement is an issue.
