Propane Tank Valve Seal

Post by TBOT422 »

Has anyone replaced the propane tank valve seal (the rubber "O-ring" at the regulator/fill connection). It is becoming increasingly more difficult to get a good connection to the regulator as the valve seal seems to have taken a set over 17 years. Discussions at local propane suppliers say they would have to replace the valve and it is special order as the tank is smaller than typical residential tanks. It seems like a lot of unecessary cost and work to simply replace a O-ring.

Any ideas?

Gary & Janet,

These o-rings need to be specifically for propane use.

I've seen numerous ones on Amazon and companies like this one; https://propanegear.com/o-ring-for-soft ... -per-pack/

I have no idea what size is needed, so you might want to pull out your caliper and take a few measurements.

Maybe there is a manufacturer listed on the regulator that you could look up and call?

I haven't been much help as I have never had to replace one...

In addition to the good advice given by Bill, consider contacting Sure Marine. My understanding is that they have parts for our Seaward ranges. I'm not sure what parts they carry between the oven and the propane tank but it's worth a phone call.

Thanks Ken,
I will give them a shot and let everyone know what I learn. It really doesn't make sense to spend nearly $300 on a new tank for a simple rubber seal.
How is it that you know all of this stuff? You are indispensable.

Finally found a replacement valve.

I talked to Sure Marine, they no longer carry the Seaward tank. However their part number crossed referenced to a Worthington tank number 299889. Our tank is stamped as a Manchester tank #TC-4EM16 which is dimensionally identical to the Worthington tank (also sold by West Marine). I was able to order a replacement valve PV1004A from Nashfuel.com for $34.99 with free shipping. Emerald Isle Distribution also had a valve for $21.50, but shipping was an additional $24. Now we will see if the new valve fits when I get it.

Good to know. Thanks for posting the cross referenced part numbers.
