New bilge pump tripping breaker

Post by SVHappy »

Hi All, hope everyone enjoyed the summer season.

I replaced the 12v bilge pump earlier this year and now noticing it's tripping the breaker. I thought maybe the pump impeller picked up something and was stuck but it's not the case it pumps fine for those first up to 20 seconds or less until it trips. The new pump says to wire to a 15A breaker since its a 12A pump.

Are those 15amp breakers that came from the factory?

According to the manual the breaker is rated at 10 amps but there also appears to be an inline fuse rated at 5 amps. If that is correct then that's your problem. I would open the electrical panel and verify that the breaker truly is 10 amps. I don't recall seeing an inline fuse on that circuit so a bit of detective work may be in order.

Stand down on the wire question....
I just opened the panel - it's a 15am breaker. I've got a spare - I'll put it in and see what happens.

I replaced the pump, and all seems to be ok. (even though it was a new pump in July)
