Dutchman and Sail Cover

Post by KenKrawford »

I'm considering modifying my sail cover to allow the Dutchman flaking lines to stay up all the time. I envisioned a vertical slit running from the top of the cover to the bottom edge. My main concern is that this may allow water to penetrate the top of the cover.
Has anyone done this modification? Will the sail now get wet?

I had cutouts in the mainsail cover for the dutchman flaking lines on my last boat. If done properly very little water will get in - however I have not done it on this boat because IMO I still think it is better without the cutouts for both UV protection and water intrusion (some will leak onto the mainsail). It is a bit more hastle to lower the dutchman lines every time you have to put the mainsail cover on but not really a big deal.
