Freezer Evaporating Units

Post by ElizabethG »

Hi All,

My boat is a 2004. After 20 years, my refrigeration has finally died.

I plan to replace it with the Dometic CU-100 ColdMachine compressor (which is currently on the boat).

For the evaporator, I'm looking at the Dometic VD-150, or the VD-151.

Has anyone used either one of these evaporators? If so, a few questions...

Did you mount it horizontally, or vertically?

Did you have any issues with the installation?

How's it holding up?

Thanks,

Bill

Hi All,

Following up on my question above...

I just installed the Dometic VD-150 evaporator in a vertical position.

The copper lines come pre-charged and the compressor is a BD50F.

Defender, West Marine and others once carried this "kit". According to Defender, Dometic is phasing these out and going with a new refrigerant and different evaporator models.

The only place I could find this kit, which closely resembled my old unit, was CatalinaDirect.com. It's was expensive, but comes with everything you need, relatively easy to install and it works.

What I'm not happy with, is the Dometic analog thermostat that comes with the kit. The cycle range I'm seeing is 10 degrees and then up to 38 degrees, then back to 10 degrees and repeats. I'm going to toss that thermostat and go with a digital thermostat where I can control the temperature differential to a tighter range.

As an FYI, CatalinaDirect.com also offers a larger evaporator, the VD-152 which is too large (in my opinion) for our freezer compartment. I made cardboard models of the VD-150 and the VD-152 evaporators and the VD-150 was a much better fit.
