Re: Cutless Bearing Question

Just replaced my cutlass bearing. Once I got the old one broke from the paint and other Ca Ca, it came out pretty easy. The new cutlass did not have toe frozen to insert in toe log.

Re: cavitation

Duncan Rest assured a 14" prop of any pitch is not the answer. I had the 14-10 and it had cavitation burn on it before it was replaced. 14" of any pitch is to small. The answer is to get the blades further back from the deadwood. This can be done with a feathering or a folding prop, or by ...

Re: Prop Cavitation

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy, Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy. Dropped the boat. New spring loading damper plate, new bronze cutlass, new driveshaft (1" longer), new Flexofold 15-10. The cavitation appears to be a thing of the past. The motor seems quieter with the new style damper. The speed is up by 1 to 1....

Re: Damper Replacement

Jerry and Ken Thank you very much for your posting on the damper job. Invaluable. That being said, very much not fun. I am convinced there is a sadistic side to the engineers who come up with this stuff. Upon pulling the old plate it appeared to be in pretty good shape. After being able to see how i...

Re: Cutlass Bearing Replacement

Got the new shaft and cutlass bearing in place. After cutting the old shaft out because it would not clear the rudder, we had a machine shop mill a new shaft. The old shaft came out in two pieces. The new shaft was able to slide pass the rudder without the cutlass being in place and the cutlass was ...

Re: Head Flushing

I couldn't take the noise of the electric head, especially if you are in a raft up or have guests. It also seemed I was always fixing something on it so in 2007 I replaced it with a Rairitan PHII manual. Best move ever. Easy to flush, quite, joker replacement a breeze. We to typically use the shower...

Re: Fried Shore Power Receptacle

When it happen to me, it to happened on the boat side but I would have to say it was my fault. Evidently the securing ring, which always seems to be a battle, was not tightened completely, causing the hot spot. If and when it happens again I will switch to the smart plug on the boat side.

Prop Cavitation

If there are any you still fighting the cavitation battle I may have gained some insight thur much searching and reading. I though I might pass along what I have found. I came across an article which pretty much covers most aspects of proper prop sizing and placement. This has become a personal ques...

Re: Flexofold Prop

May I direct you to the following test done by Yachting Monthly out of the UK. Just that much more to consider. I had come across it prior to Flexofold adding a link, it was just easier to find via this link

Re: Fried Shore Power Receptacle

Can I assume this happened on the dock side of the cord. Without a secruing ring, like the boat end, the connection to the dock electric always seems marginal. Without a good connection you get hot spots which can start to melt things, including the plug prongs. While a Smat Plug will help on the bo...

Re: Gori propeller

Bill- I have the same issue with my Catalina 14/10 and 15/9 props. From what research I have been able to do it would appear the bulk of the problem is due to the props lack of distance to the dead wood of the hull in conjunction with the weight of the boat and loading of the prop. When the heavily ...

Cutlass Bearing Replacement

Anyone on the Chesapeake Bay had to have their cutlass bearing replaced yet and if so where did you have it done? Did they do a good job? What was entailed in the replacement and how much did they hit you up for it? After 10yrs ours is due.

Re: Flexofold Prop

Justin and Brett You both have the 3 blade Flexofold 15/10. Is it safe to assume you guys also have the Universal M35B motor with the 1.88 transmission reduction? I ask because I am hull # 103 and I am not to sure as to when they went to the Yanmar motors which seem to have a very different gear red...

Idiot Lights

There are two red warning lights in the instrument panel at the helm. When the key is turned on the warning buzzer goes off until the motor is started. My red warning lights are not lighting up when the buzzer is on while starting. I don't remember if they use to light while starting and are no long...

Re: Flexofold Prop

Brett- Just back from Annapolis boat show. Trying to figure out the gear reduction was a lot of fun. Had to take a picture of the gear box tag and take it to the Universal people to get a translation on to English. Nothing in my manual that states what the reduction is, only what optional ones would...

Re: Alternator output

Mark - Turns out the black ground on the 1st back is ground for the boats DC system and the black ground on the 2nd is the ground for the engine. If you disconnect the black ground from bank 2 and try to start the motor you should find it won't start. Needless to say it took me a little while to fig...

I had 2 SS 3" X 1/4" disks made/cut and attached them to the hull with 5200. Don't really care to much about the rubber caps any more.

Re: Alternator output

Blew one of my fuses out. I can only assume it occured when one of the batteries gassed off. My fault, I had been quite lax in checking the water level in that battery, it had been sitting there as a starter and had never been used. That being said, I went on line and ordered replacement fuses from ...

Re: Flexofold Prop

Leigh - question do you know what pitch you settled on with your 15" Kiwi? Brett - what kind of speeds are you seeing with yours being over proped? The original prop on the Catalina 350 was a 15-9 sail prop. They later went to a 14-10 Michigan Wheel prop to combat the cavitation issue. Their lo...

Re: Flexofold Prop

Brett I am fighting what I consider a somewhat slow boat. I did replace the stock prop with the 14-10 but I typically run at about 5-5.5knts. When I did the WOT test there was no difference in the max RPMs between neutral and forward. I am seriously considering a Flexofold given that they seem to ra...
