Re: Raymarine Troubleshooting Charge
With regard to Raymarine repair charge I'll let you know what they estimate for an inspection and possible repair of SL70RC which I'm just removing. I spoke to the local rep who don't do repairs but send it off to another distributor and he thought it might be a "good deal" if I coul;d get...

Re: Rub from shore power cable
Teri, You can get the split foam at any hardware store in the plumbing section. Comes in 4' and 6' sections. To cover 50' power cable would cost about $6. Great job for the crew when you have docked or are getting ready to depart......in fact they should do more. They would all store in the big laza...

Rub from shore power cable
For those of us who like to dock bow in and then run the power cable down the entire length of the boat we always have some annoying rub marks from the power cable around the front cleat/toerail and in the cockpit. A nice sleeve like those on a vacuum hose would be good but the simpler fix is to cop...

Re: Raymarine SL70RC Plus Radar/Chartplotter display
Thanks Dan. It sounds like you got the Steve Martin treatment when he tried to rent a car in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. At least I know now that I didn't it abuse it which seems to be the first thing suggested by the OEM. I'll ask around locally and see if anyone can fix. If I get any success I...

Raymarine SL70RC Plus Radar/Chartplotter display
After nearly 9 years of troublefree operation we have a malfunction. When switched on with nav instruments we get the panther eyes coming up but then the screen flutters to black with MOB and a few of the soft key options showing. None of the keys clear the screeen or have any effect and it goes bac...

Re: Engine - transmission
One more failure on our Hurth transmission. This is the second of the summer and one of many since we got the boat new in 2004. Either we got a lemon or it's a poor piece of engineering. Transmission goes into reverse no problem to allow us to back out of the dock and then, voila, no forward thrust ...

Ken (or anyone) , what's the best procedure for measuring the actual liquid level in the battery and where it actually should be relative to the plates?

Re: sailing from Florida to Oregon
Jimmy Cornell's "world cruising routes" outlines the challenge of the Panama to Oregon route. Going West to Hawaii and then on to Alaska and back down the coast is the easier sail but of course takes much longer. Time to go and what you can expect to encounter in weather etc. are all inclu...

Re: cavitation
Does anyone know the beam at the waterline and the hull draft excluding the keel? The original 15x9 propeller is being questioned (relative to transmission failure and severe wear on the thrust washer) and based on program a 14x8 or 14x9 would seem to be right but I want to make sure the input data ...

Re: Damper Replacement
On related topic I understand Westerbeke are no longer using Hurth and have changed to another manufacturer for transmission. Has anyone replaced the Hurth? My Hurth continues to fail after being rebuilt in 2011 - that's twice in four years - and option being offered is to rebuild again (at yard exp...

Re: Raymarine ST60 knotmeter

After I pulled the transducer out and got the bung in to replace...

Water Temp and VMG still showing on display but no boat speed available. Paddle wheel seems ok. Pulling boat for bottom paint next week. Unit is nearly 9 years old so maybe it's tired.............no real way to test it? Has anyone replaced one of these? The removal and replacement is easy..........j...

Having Fun
Just had an outstanding sail in late afternoon early evening from Nanaimo , Vancouver Island. Nice chop and a very warm NW breeze that ranged from 12 to 24 knots. With full sail up above about 17 I find the 350 a bit heavy on steering and when trimmed to about 1/3 on the Genoa we just flew along at ...

Re: Heat exchanger
I've seen some coolant in the sump and it looks like it's coming from the heat exchanger area so I decided to remove and have it flushed. Getting the straps off was fine but getting the hoses off was another story due to hardness. Is it common to cut and replace the hoses when you do this since it's...
