Re: Battery Fuse

I use terminal fuses as outlined in the Pbase.com article. I have not had any issues with them. I bought the 2 terminal ones.

From another thread it was suggested that Gem is the manufacturer (http://www.catalina350.net/phpBB3/viewt ... f=15&t=613) I have used o-rings from the local hardware store without issue.

Re: Catalina cockpit table

I have gone to the local hardware store and picked up some thin shock cord. A couple of bucks for 20'. I then removed the 2 halves of the support from the table, disassembled each section, tied in a the new shock cord and reassembled. If I remember correctly, you do need to pre-tension the cord when...

Re: 2004 350 Cockpit enclosure

Hi Wayne, if you need to replace your canvas, we had ours done by Genco, in Toronto. They came out, measured and patterned. They did a full enclosure for us with zip out screens and windows. Hard plastic for the dodger, and soft for the enclosure. We are very pleased with the fit, finish and durabil...

Re: Battery Monitors

That is interesting regarding the SmartGauge. I will have to look up some info on it. For myself, I leave my gauge on Amps in/out and occasionally check Amp hours consumed, for overnight, and State of Charge during the day since I have solar.

Re: Battery Monitors

I installed the BMV 600 series from Victron purchased from Jamestown Distributing. It also has an algorithm to calculate state of charge and also gives you Current in/out using a shunt. There is a very good writeup on installs here: http://forums.sbo.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=125606 Also a...

Re: Location of Mast wiring/cable connections

Frank, Once you have disconnected all wires (lights, wind instrument and VHF antenna), I would tape a retrieving string to the wires, so you can pull them back down the compression post when you re-step the mast. I also lift the mast about a foot up and then pull the wires up the compression post by...

Re: Replacement fittings for water distribution manifolds

As a temp fix to get you going, the threads are standard plumbing size. I made my bypass with brass fittings from the Home Depot. Not sure who makes the manifolds and connectors. The might be from Whale Marine.

Re: Problems unfurling the Main

If you are in salt water, you may want to rinse out your bearings with fresh water regularly. You can try some Sailkote lube on the track and bearings to see if it helps. You may need new bearings as Brett suggests. Also check out the bearings on the furling unit. I also head a little off of the win...

Re: Anchor for our 350

We typically anchor in sand and mud. We use a Bruce anchor and my neighbour on his Cat 36 uses a Rochna. Both have never let go in mud and sand. The Rochna has a better reputation in resetting and in a wider range of bottom types.

I also by-pass at the manifolds and I use an 18" piece of hose with brass connectors.

Re: Catalina 350 versus 36

I have experience with both boats. My boat neighbour for the last 4 years has the 36 (one year different, same engine, same wing keel). We compare boats constantly. Both of us like the 350 for the roominess inside. I have the inmast furling he has the regular rig. We both love our in-mast for cruisi...

Re: Winterizing water heater

Hi Jim, You are very welcome. Yes I do leave the pressure relief valve and the drain valve open on the tank all winter. The trick is remembering to close them in the spring before you pressurize the water system and wonder why the bilge is filling up ;) Interesting that you don't have the quick conn...

Re: Winterizing water heater

Hi Bob,

I think it was just to prevent back flow (why? I don't know). I had an issue where I wasn't getting any hot water to the faucets, pulled it all apart to find the check valve spring had dislocated and was causing the blockage. I removed the check flow valve and haven't had any issues since.

Re: Winterizing water heater

HI Jim, I have not worried about those hoses since they run "downhill" to the bilge. If you are worried, you can disconnect them at the tank and blow through them. Note there is a check valve at the water tank on one of the Whale connectors. ( I don't remember whether it was the blue or re...

Re: Potential 350 Owner

I have the inmast furling, and would never order a boat without one again. I have not had any issues with mine. If it starts to get less easy to furl or unfurl I know to adjust my boom vang, and all is well. The key is to have the angle of the boom set properly and it is very easy to tell and adjust...

Re: Battery storage during winter

HI Brett,

I don't remember the voltage, but the battery meter was usually around 70-75% for both. I installed a Victron Battery monitor this year with the new batteries (I replaced the 4Ds with 6V Golf cart batteries). So I should have a more accurate state of battery in the spring.

Re: Battery storage during winter

Just as an example, your mileage may vary, I replaced my 2004 dated batteries this past summer 2013. I topped up and fully charged in the fall (Oct), unplugged them and charged them again in April when I went to open the boat in the spring. I also maintained my batteries during the summer season, to...

Re: Winterizing

One of the reasons to keep the anti freeze out of the hot water tank, is because it takes a lot too flush it clear of the anti freeze in the spring time. The taste and the foaming of the anti freeze in the water takes quite a lot of flushing before it is removed. I therefore put in a bypass loop whe...

Re: Winterizing

Also before running anti-freeze through your water system, disconnect the hoses to the hot water tank at the manifolds in the bilge, attach an additional hose to the same connections on the manifolds to create a bypass. drain the hot water tank, at the tank. Don't put anti freeze in the hot water ta...
