Re: Changing Raymarine E80 to Garmin

Hello I wrote previously about the change to Garmin but will offer a few things that may be helpful. First I whole heartedly endorse the change from the pathetic C80 to Garmin. I chose the GPSMAP 1243xsv which will fit into the existing C350 Nav Pod. Note the 1242 will not. This was the best improve...

Re: Diesel Exhaust Hose R&R

A tough job indeed but you can do it. The responses are excellent. I high endorse the use of heat to remove the old hose, resist cutting. I use a hair dryer on high which takes a little longer. The loop is critical so get that right. I would only add to never reuse the hose clamps and buy the best s...

Re: VHF antenna replacement

I totally agree with Steve regarding using only the RG8X coax such as Ancor Marine Grade Coax Cable ANC 151550 and quality Shakespeare connectors. Im a big fan of AIS and mentioned the one I installed previously but I did add the Em-Trak AIS external antenna. This I mounted on top of the aft cabin c...

Re: VHF antenna replacement

I recommend scraping the old Mertz and going with new Shakespeare 5215 antenna. This will fit into the existing bracket. I ran new coax and all new connectors. Even with a split at the bottom of the mast and again at the nav station to add a Em-Trak B923 AIS, we still have excellent VHF reception. A...

Re: Maxwell 800 chainwheel 108 - chain type REVISION

My apologies ... in the last post I captioned 5/16 high test chain as G63. No such thing, it's G43 chain that fits the 108 chainwheel nicely.

Maxwell 800 chainwheel 108 - chain type

Like many of you we have a Maxwell VW 800. Ours has the 108 Chainwheel (108 is stamped on the lower half facing upward, cant miss it) I have been everywhere trying to get a correct answer on the correct chain for the 108 wheel. Finally on the phone with Vetus Maxwell 1-410-712-0740 I got a guy willi...

Re: Is aft hull too thick for inside hull transducer?

Short answer no. I researched this too. Spoke to Garmen, spoke to the best marine electric / electronics firms the the Pacific BC area. No one supported the notion that on our boats the transducer that would shoot through the hull rather than a thu hull transducer would work well. I did an extensive...

Re: Fluid Replacement Recommendations

Hi Ken, 560ml is the amount I see recommended but I always find it a bit less than full. Too full = very bad. After all sorts of small manual extraction pumps I have settled (for now) on a large medical syringe. About 1" diameter and 6" long from most drug stores. These have enough frictio...

Re: Prop + Net = *@#!!

Sorry for the delayed response. The timing hole is adjacent the aft starboard engine mount. Slightly above the horizontal engine mount plate and in front of the mount bolt/nut. About a 3/4" hole +/-
Good info in both the Universal user and tech manual.

Re: Rocna Anchror Question /Chain size

Excellent discussion! I too changed out the old Bruce 33kg (1970s technology) for a Rocna 15. The rode is 120' 5/16 galvanized chain and 200' Samson 8 braid line. I run it on the starboard side as its longer and in pays out with no issue. I removed the spare smaller Bruce with 3/8 chain and rope rod...

Prop + Net = *@#!!

Its happened to many and it happened to us last Friday am. Leaving our marina and motoring out the Vancouver Harbour we went through a very benign, somewhat unavoidable, little line of stuff in the water. Right away I was aware of a change in sound. Then a decrease of speed by perhaps 1.0 prop net.j...

Re: Cutlass bearing replacement

Hello schipp 790 I really appreciate your taking the time to make this post. Very clever. I'm assuming you replaced the shaft? It appears the wear on yours was at the bearing and very visible once the coupling end was released and the shaft drawn aft some. Might it have been an option to cut the sha...

M35B Engine Overhaul?

I'd really appreciate your opinions and experiences with whether or not to overhaul our M35B. We are approaching 2000 engine hrs. Its somewhat a product of living, boating in the Pacific Northwest. Winds are often unsuitable for getting where you're wanting to be so motoring and motor sailing happen...

Bottom Paint

I have searched all the posts on this topic but don't see much. I was hoping to start a discussion on this topic as to what you have found to work well for you both in bottom paint materials and application methods. Our boat (prior to us owning) has fallen victim to poor application processes and ya...

Damper Plate

Just a word of thanks to all who have gone before. The many previous posts were helpful. I attach an alternate engine lift set up. I was as surprised a 42" 2x4 will slip down each side of the engine and rest on the stingers (bit of mods) Its more for interest than any firm recommendation. I had...
