Turning freezer up or down?

So there's the knob inside the freezer with 1-9 numbers on it that control the thermostat for the freezer. I believe higher numbers means colder. However, there's no "tick" mark as far as I can tell to know that by turning the knob I'm making it colder or warmer. Does anybody know? Is it clockwise for colder, or the other way around?

I'm going from memory here so don't take this as gospel. I believe that indicator line on the thermostat would be at the twelve o'clock position.
