thru hull

Post by John Z »

We purchased "Outstanding" in the spring of 2008. Now that it is on land I noticed a thru hull on the starboard side just aft of the keel which has a "protective cage" over it about the size of a half tennis ball. The owner's manual does not indicate what this is.
Can anyone one tell me what this is for and what if any maintenence is needed.
Thanks,

John Z.

John,
I can't say for sure but would guess it might be an intake for an air conditioner water pump. If you don't have A/C, obviously disregard my answer.

The new 350's use a water scoop strainer in that area to provide positive water pressure while underway to the dripless shaft seal. They have gone away from taking the water from the engine cooling system.

If this is the case, inside the boat you should see a short hose running from the nipple on the shaft seal to a valve connected to that scoop strainer.

Otherwise it could be for your air conditioning as the previous post suggested.

Thanks for the help. It appears to be the scoop strainer for the dripless shaft as I do not have AC. Appreciate the help and advice.
