Does anyone happen to know the diameter of the stanchions? I suspect that they are 1" but need to know for sure.

Bigger than 1"
I really think that the stanchions are larger than 1".
When I bought the rail mount BBQ, I initially bought the smaller sized mounting hardware (for 7/8" - 1") and had to return it for the larger size (for 1 1/8" - 1 1/4") rails. That larger mount worked great.
