Old or new cutlass bearing?

Post by SeaBreeze78 »

Greetings all:

About to haul my boat. It is one of the older models (2003 #78). Question: how can I tell if the older style cutlass bearing has been replaced to the new brass cutlass? Is it as simple as tapping on the cutlass protrusion. Metal sound and feel equals the cutlass bearing was replaced at some point.

I understand I still may have to replace the current cutlass bearing if there is play.

Thanks,

The older one had a plastic (phenolic) shell. The later ones had a brass shell. It will be pretty obvious as either should be installed with about 3/4" protruding so you have something to grab onto to try to twist it out. With most of the plastic ones, this is a lost cause as the shell shatters when you try this leaving nothing to grab onto.

Scott, that is what I imagined. Pretty sure mine is now a brass Cutlass. Will know at haul out. Thanks
