VHF Speaker at helm?

Post by starfish »

Greetings Forum,

I have hull #333 and am wondering if anyone has installed a speaker at the helm for the VHF? If so, how and where did you put it?
Thanks

Hi, I have an ICOM unit with a remote handheld mike and speaker unit mounted on the wheel pedestal and the base unit with a second handheld mounted above the chart table. I dont like the reliability of the remote handheld - it has failed 2 times and needed to be replaced at almost the cost of the entire VHF base unit. One time the tiny on/off switch failed, the second time the plug in socket had a small break and stopped it being attached. Both failed after about 5 years so I expect the present handheld will do likewise shortly. I seem to think the remote costs about $120 at West Marine.

By the way, I usually have the VHF set on Ch 16 at all times when i am underway.

Hope this helps,
