In so. Cal. we have two 100 w solar panels, flexiable type, which we attach to the bimini during our trips. We just replaced our 55 amp Mando with another identical 55 amp (such an easy job!).
The two solar panels replace enough amps (150+- each day) we don't need to start engine for recharging. We have LED lighting and are careful with refrigerator (turn thermostat to high setting,nearly off at night).

Rick,
I used an older GM 2" foot 150 Amp, 3 wire external regulator alternator found on ebay for about $120. Used a ARS4 smart regulator. Had to modify the tensioning bracket and changed the belt to a serpentine with new grooved pullies on the crank, water pump and alternator. This conversion kit was from Beta Marine. (about $250) a few years ago. Let me know if that helps.
