has anyone cross referenced the Universal thermostat to a generic another brand? The Universal model seems pretty pricey at $58.

I don't, but welcome to the OMG, they're pretty proud of that part club. You might try cross referencing that motor over to Kubota and see what is in the Kubota offering for it, assuming the equipment version runs at the same temps.
