Mando Alternator

Post by ElizabethG »

Hi All,

On a cruise this past weekend, the Mando alternator stopped charging. Luckily, I had solar.

I'm going to have the alternator repaired, but I want to purchase a spare. I'm looking for a direct replacement i.e., same amperage, same mounting configuration, same electrical connections, etc. I want to be able to do a quick swap if I have a failure and I'm underway.

Does anyone have a link for a direct replacement?

I'm not sure, but I think the Mando p/n is 18-5966. When I pull that p/n up, I see a lot of references to Sierra alternators...not sure if they now own Mando.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,

Were I to invest in a new alternator, I would buy a higher-amp one and keep the current one as a spare.

Hi Brett,

Yep, thought about that...

Do you have any recommendations for a "drop in" higher amp model?

Thanks!

Hello all.
Keep in mind that the drive belt will not drive alternators much above about 75 amps with out producing heavy dusting and excessive belt ware.
The better solution is a larger alternator with an external three stage smart regulator. This will charge the batteries faster.
The ultimate fix is upgrading the drive belt to a serpentine type, 120-150 amp alternator with an external regulator as above.
I have used this system for about 7 years and can report it works great.
Good luck with your quest.

This one may fit— not sure which motor you have. It’s certainly more expensive, but worth considering given the reputation of Compass Marine. In my experience the company is very helpful. https://shop.marinehowto.com/products/c ... alternator
Good luck
