Re: PSS Shaft seal
You want part # PSS07-100-112R. This is for a 1" shaft and 1 1/2" shaft log.

Re: PSS Shaft seal
Whoops - that is the wrong part. I called PYI, told them my boat make and model and they said I have a 1" shaft (correct) and a 1 1/2" stern tube (WRONG!). My stern tube measures 2". It would probably be a good idea to measure yours before ordering.

Ken -
What was the outcome of getting the coupling off the shaft. Did you wind up having to cut, or were you able to get it off without destroying the coupling.
Seeing the same project in my future.
Thanks.

Re: PSS Shaft seal
Bill, a friend of mine who is a retired machinist called and offered to help. We used this to remove the coupling - http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive ... 69889.html. It took 4 1/2 hrs. No surprises once the coupling was off. No evidence of corrosion, etc.. Just one heck of a tight fit.

Thanks Ken.
I was happily shocked when I saw the price of the wheel puller. Probably will need to spend more on PB Blaster!

Hi Tim (and everyone else),
The shaft is 1" and the tube is 2". The PYI model number is 02-100-200. I just had it replace on Knot Dreaming.

Re: PSS Shaft seal
I thought there was a write up somewhere on this website on how to change the PSS bellows.
Anybody no where?
Also - I saw a "puller" mentioned to remove the flange at the transmission side of the shaft is assume
after jacking up the rear of the engine harbor Freight was mentioned but what was the make and size of the puller?

Re: PSS Shaft seal
Larry, I did a write up of the procedure that will appear in the next issue of Mainsheet. I can email you a copy if you'd like to do it sooner.
There is no need to jack up the transmission. Here's the puller that I used. - http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive ... 69889.html. You will have to cut off the threaded bolt that goes through the center since it is too long to clear the transmission. When you unbolt the shaft coupling from the transmission and slide the shaft as far aft as it will go, there is approx. 5-6" of clearance to work.

Thanks Ken
Having once change the damper plate, I understand what you are saying.
I would like a copy of your write up sooner - can you send it to me ?

Re: PSS Shaft seal
There are two messages in this thread regarding stern tube size
One says 1 1/2" and One says 2"
Which is the right stern tube size? Is the difference here between MKI and MKII?

Re: PSS Shaft seal
Mike, the correct size for the stern tube is 2" (at least for a Mk I). My reference to the 1 1/2" size was based on info. supplied by PYI. When I tried to install it, it was way too small.

Re: PSS Shaft seal
Thanks Ken!, I intend to replace this during my upcoming haul-out for bottom paint (only once every 4+ years here in SOCAL)...now I've got to decide on whether a cutlass bearing is warranted...very little (but some) play...only 550 engine hours...but 13 years old

Ken,
Did you buy a whole new PSS, or the Maintenance kit with new bellows, O rings and clamps?
Thanks, Mike

I bought the maintenance kit which contains the bellows, hose clamps and set screws. Everything else was still in good shape.

Did you cut out the old bellows? I have the flange unbolted and slid back, but I cannot get that kind of clearance. I do not see a penalty for cutting it out since it gets replaced. Cutting it and removing it seems to make sense. Is that what you did?

Re: PSS Shaft seal
Yes I cut the old bellows off. When you go to install the new one, pull the prop.shaft as far aft as you can. This will give you room to slide the new bellows on along with the stainless steel collar and the carbon flange.
