For all you 'Jokers' out there... good news

Post by AynB »

Good news for all you jokers.
That is to say for all you folks that own Thetford / Dometic / Wilcox Crittenden Newport heads.
Yep, I made my trip to Seattle and spoke with the good folks at Marine Sanitation. Of the two joker valves that they thought would work, the Jabsco with the triangular valve matched the best, but was not perfect. ( I do think that it would have worked though) Then the sales rep asked the manager if she'd looked at the Raritan. We pulled one out and measured and found a nearly perfect match.
Heres the numbers:
  • Thetford Original
    OD 2 7/32
    Thickness 6.5/32
    Blade 1 23/32
    Opening 1 16/32
    Tongue 6/32

    Raritan Model C253
    OD 2 6/32
    Thickness 7/32
    Blade 1 22/32
    Opening 1 15/32
    Tongue 7/32
Thickness is the measurement for what would be a flat gasket, thus the Raritan will be a bit thicker, which means it will deform a bit more and make a better seal.
Tongue is the thickness of the section that has the razor split to allow waste to pass through. I figure a bit thicker can only mean it will last a little longer.

Only downsides are that the Raritan costs $19.25 and is red. So much for fashion. At $20 bucks it still a lot less than the $185 for the kit and at least we can get these guys. The manager of the store, when asked what was the likelihood that Raritan would discontinue this joker, she replied not very likely as it's used in all of their current line of heads.

So.. there ya go.

Wow- the pictures are great and your effort here amazing! Thank you very much. Personally I prefer pink/red for my "she" boat.

What a wonderful alternative to a $185 kit - and we all face the joker replacement at one point or another

Thanks for all your effort!

Thanks for the work on this. I did see West Marine carries part C253, but reviews were horrible (5). There was a comment on the pink one being a little less ridged and C254 was better. Does any one no if the dimensions are the same or if this part will work as well.

Okay. I followed up with Raritan about the diff's between the C-253 and C-254. Here's the reply:
Hello,
The C253 and C254 are used in different model Raritan units. Although they
both will fit in each other place, they are optimized for our specific model
pumps.
I hope that helps.
Thanks

Subject: Question about the differences between the C-253 and the C-254
backflow valves

Good day. To make a long story short, I will be using a C-253 in my Wilcox
Crittenden Newport marine head. As I measure your valve and my last official
Thetford one, I see very little difference - not enough to caution me off. I
do find that some folks are down reviewing the 253 model as it has not been
lasting as long as one would expect. Some are suggesting using the C-254
model. As I can't lay my hands on a 254, can you tell me if the physical
size of the two are the same and can be used interchangeably ? Barring that
, can you send me a spec drawing of the 254 dimensions?
Thank you for your time and expertise.

My take away is that they both can do the job. As for longevity, I searched elsewhere ( beyond WM ) and got a 50/50 view that , in the Raritan world, one was longer lasting than the other.
So , I guess, it's back to "Your mileage may vary." At least we know of two valves that will do the job for us with the older style head.

Two nights ago, our joker failed. Of course it was the night before we were to take three guests out for a day of sailing/dining and fun. So... I have now had the chance to actually install the Raritan C253 red joker valve in the Wilcox Critt Newport and I am happy to say that it fits perfectly, seals correctly and works just fine. I will report on the longevity when it fails, but for now I am a happy camper.
