Re: Remote start/stop

Go to your local auto parts store and buy a remote started kit/ It's two alligator clips connected by a push button. You clip the red wire to the red power cable at the starter. The black cable gets connected to the terminal on the starter. It’s usually a smaller wire terminal very near the power ca...

Re: RPM Drop

You mentioned that the fuel filters were replaced recently, I'd start with the gaskets on those and make sure you don't have a minor air leak.

Re: Prop replacement

I don't know the answer to your question. I looked, and I don't see my notes about which props we tested. There were three, the third being the 14x10 and the winner. I do not believe they were pitched any more than the 14x10, probably less. The increase pitch over this could harm your transmission i...

Re: Prop replacement

Yes, there has been a lot posted about the issue with the prop making noise at higher RPM and the boat not going into chop well with the original prop. The original prop was called a "sailor" prop by the manufacturer. It's blades were not as wide as a normal prop. About 3/4" more narr...

Re: Holding tank

I have had to swim under the boat and stick a flex rod up the drain to unclog the tank exit. Be prepared to swim like hell and obviously do this out in open water not in the marina.

Re: Problems unfurling the Main

There is a lock nut on this "S" hook that if it gets loose, will let the hook lay flat and jam inside the mast. Just make sure this nut is tight and it will hold the "S" hook upright.

Re: Problems unfurling the Main

Don't waste your time or money. You need a new main. The reason it will not unfurl is that it is no longer a flat sail, it has a big old belly. Recutting doesn't work either. Get a new flat main, period. Several have already been through this. Otherwise, try this method. When you furl the main in, p...

Re: Standing Rigging Replacement

Previous replies are good advise. I understand where your broker is coming from. I too used to broker boats. The broker is trying to avoid problems that arise at survey. We all heard the 10 year deal on rigging, but I've never had anything fail that was taken care of, checked and in good shape. My o...

"Is our gypsy made to work with either G4 or BBB chain"? That Maxwell Tech rep said to look for a number on the gypsey itself. It is stamped into the metal. I found the number 108 on mine. Here is the official reply from Maxwell; The 108 chain wheel is for 5/16" G4 ISO high test chain...

Re: Which Anchor Chain?

A question for everyone. I have the Maxwell VW800 windlass on my 2004 C350. The chain size is 5/16 for the gypsy. I believe the chain on there now is a G4, and it works just fine. But, I can't find this answer: The question is "Is our gypsy made to work with either G4 or BBB chain" I have ...

Re: Solar panel selection

My panels are older so the current sizes may differ. The brand is Kyocera, with a Blue Sky booster controller. I've been very happy with the location and performance. I fixed them in place so that I would not be able to "trim" or adjust them. I come from racing background, and if my were a...

Re: Solar panel selection

I have the std JSI bimini that runs a few feet back past the backstay. My estimate is that the distance from the backstay to the back edge of the bimini is about 28". I have installed two 120 watt solar panels end to end in this space. So they run across the back of the boat, out from under the...

Re: Exhuast Elbow

I would usually suggest the elbow too. However, because it ran fine on the way down, then overheated on the way back, this may not be the cause this time. That symptom doesn't usually happen so suddenly, it slowly worsens over time. Check this. If you have a 90 degree bend in any of the hoses leadin...

Re: Replacing the hot water heater

I haven't removed mine yet, so no help there. I would love to replace mine with a 4 gallon or a 6 gallon at most. It takes way to long for the engine to heat up 11 gallons. Because of this, I installed a 2 gallon tank under the sink, and we use that while out cruising, and just sitting not moving fr...

Re: Newport model 1600 broken hinge on lid replace/repair?

I've had this happen a few times, and so have friends on their boats. Sitting on the seat in rough seas can damage these hinges. One time I just bought a cheap seat from Walmart, took off the hinges and replaced mine with these. Same exact fit, same screw holes and all. Easy and cheap. Better yet, g...

I think David on Blue Wings puts it well. It depends on your usage plans. I'll also offer this. To fit on the foredeck without blocking access to the anchor locker, 9.5 feet is max. 8.5 would be better. Weight; Since you'll be lifting it, go with a lighter model. Some of the Ribs come in a "Lit...

Re: Alternator Questions

Leigh is correct. The math is not that simple. The first thing is that your 50 amp std alternator will yield about 40 amps max. You may start out at 40 amps going in, but you will see the input slowly drop as the batteries begin to accept the charge. I would guess that after an hour, you'd be down t...
