Re: Mud!

I second the recommendation for Gaspirilla : http://www.gasparillamarina.com/ . Perhaps you will consider Fisherman's Village in Punta Gorda. Do not count on Big Pass. A recommendation made to me: Never plan on coming in Big Pass. Only go out in fair weather, light wind and a rising tide. I never ha...

Exhuast Elbow

Has anyone replaced the exhaust elbow or inspected it? I believe the elbow is a Westerbeke part; does anyone have the part number?

Re: Complete Electronics Replacement

In 2011, I found the charts on my Garmin 4208 closely matched the Explorer charts. I have been told that Garmin no longer includes charts for the Bahamas with purchase of a chart plotter. I suggest that whatever you do, compare your electronic charts with Explorer Charts before setting off on your c...

Re: Looking for Salon Cushions for double berth setup

I have them, never used. But Eagle's Wings is listed for sale on Yacht World. If she doesn't sell in the next few months, I could remove the cushions from the equipment list if you still wanted them. Better yet , you buy the whole boat!

Re: anchor comparison/selection

I have used the Ronca type anchor for about 7 years with 90 ft of chain and 200 ft of rope.. I love it. It has set almost every time first time except in soupy mud. It has never come undone. Active Captain promoted this type of anchor recently : " Looking back, we were a fairly early adopter of...

Re: cruise from East coast of Florida to West - any thoughts

We have made the trip as have many others with an air draft somewhat more than 49 ft. You will need Billy the Tipper to tip your boat. He doesn't return phone calls in a timely manner if at all but he is the only game in town. Check with Indian Town Marina for contact info for Billy. Two bridges to ...

Re: Tanks not showing levels

Try checking the voltage levels, an option on the monitor, at full and empty. Maybe you lost the ground connection? Odd that they would all quick working at the same time.

Re: Boiling batteries

You could disconnect the house batteries and connect the starting battery and try the charger. If the charger works OK, you know the problem is the batteries.

Re: Replacement of Raymarine Rl 70c radar chartplotter with

I like my Garmin 4208 chart plotter. I have no experience with Raymarine so I can't compare. I also have a Garmin radar and a sonar with a hockey puck type transducer that shots through the hull. The autopilot & wind transducer are Nexus which is now a Garmin company. My VHF sends AIS info to th...

Re: Prop anode - first year in saltwater

To me six months is pretty good. But I think your zinc should have been replaced before it was that far gone. I hang a zinc fish over the side attached directly to the engine block. A diver checks the zinc monthly and replaces it if it is more than 1/2 depleted. If I plug my boat into shore power at...

Re: low tide

Why Cedar Key? Do you live near Cedar Key? Are there any sailboats there? If you live near Gainesville, I suggest St Augustine or Orange Park. If you live south of Gainesville, why not Tampa Bay? Waterfront lots are available here in Punta Gorda Iles if you are moving to Florida.

Re: Battery Replacement

The easiest way is to get two strong kids to pick each battery up by its rope handles and carry the battery out. Using the main halyard or spinnaker halyard to lift each battery up to the deck will also work. Easier than you might think. Once at deck level slide the batteries down a ramp to the dock...

In 2008, my insurance obtained through the Power Sq paid replacement cost including installation. Following inspection by a surveyor, I started to replace some items myself before getting an electronics guy. Mistake. He would have provided an estimate including labor for everything then used special...

Re: Marco Island to Coon Key Inland Passage

Active Captain comments shoaling to less than 3 ft at R10 near Goodland. Need 2 ft of tide for 4.6 ft draft. We have never tried it. You can get from Naples to Marco on the inside; we have done it on a rising tide. We cleared the Cape Coral bridge (barely), charted at 55 ft but reported to be 53 ft ...

Re: Elbow for Universal Heat Exchanger

I bought a spare Heat Exchanger from Mr Cool becuase the clamps on mine failed and I liked the clamp design on the one from Mr Cool. Why not just buy the clamps? Well the clamps were about a 1/3 of the cost of the Heat Exchanger so I just bought the whole thing. However, it came missing the elbow. C...

Can anyone provide the source for the large elbow that screws into the Universal heat exchanger.
The elbow has a flat square top.

I replaced the Wilcox head with a Raritan Sea Era head purchased from Catalina. Works much better than the Wilcox. If you choose this head, I recommend getting the external water pump option. This will give you more room behind the head base for maintenance.

Re: boom furling vs stack pack

The rolling furler boom would be very nice. With it, you will be able to reef the main to any degree required and the reefed sail will be lower than the corrsponding reefed sail with the roller furling in the mast. Not sure how trouble free the furling boom is becuase I don't have one. I am consider...
