Re: Water in the Bilge While on the Hard

I think most people have discovered that the water gets in through two areas. First- Mast - In heavy rain the weep holes become overwhelmed and the water overflows the wiring tube in the bottom of the mast. Second- Anchor locker- rain water is diverted through the bow roller and channeled right over...

Re: shurflo strainer, replacement screen

Wow....every two months? That is a lot. Are they stainless steel? I don't know if mine are shurflo but they've been with the boat for 5 years and no problem. We have stainless steel mesh wrapped around a red plastic frame the is inside of a clear plastic canister about the size of a cambells soup ca...

Re: Spinnaker

I think it was a block that could accomodate 1/2" line or maybe 5/8"...I can't remember but it was the same size as the jib halyard. It was a single garhauer block. I used one size smaller on the tack and for my sheets. I wanna say that they are the same size as the furling lines on our bo...

Re: Spinnaker

I haven't but I think you would run the risk of chafe on your halyard at a minimum and worst case is the halyard would jump the sheeve and get wedged so it couldnt' be lowered.

Re: Catalina Hull Blistering Warranty

Norm,
Can you explain more about this? Since the warranty was prorated, how did that affect you? Did you have to split the cost or something? What hull number are you?
If you did have to pony up money and you feel comfortable answering, what was the damage?

THanks

Jerry,
check out the thread "spinnaker size" in the Rigging forum. It has a pretty detailed way to do the rigging for this sail.

downwind sailing

Richard, Look in the Rigging Forum of this website under "Spinaker Size". I think it will tell you all you need to know of a good downwind setup using an genaker or Asymetrical sail. I have flown mine by myself but only in 8 knots of breeze or less. You do have to go on the foredeck to hoi...

autopilot failure

George, My autopilot was doing the same thing this year. I had a marine electronic company come down and check it out. What was happening is when it was in auto mode, it would for no reason drastically alter course. The heading never matched the compass and recalibration wouldn't work. This went on ...

Hi Armin, I have sealed the top ( between the counter top and walls of the fridge) with duct seal roping and insulation weatherstrip tape over that. After several days on the hook, there was a little frost on the evaporator but my guess is that we put block ice in the fridge and freezer sections and...

I for one am pretty desperate for a solution. We were out for 4 days during July 4th weekend and both boxes were between 47 and 50 degrees. Some food went bad. It works with shore power and the air conditioner running, I can get 30 in the freezer section. Before we left we froze all of our small wat...

Hi Jim, The boat has 3 double berths and a single, so it is designed to have seven aboard. I believe its also rated for european offshore which I think means it's designed to at least carry a capacity of eight people. Some others on this list may have better knowledge about this. Hopefully they will...

Trevor, The spinaker I'm talking about here is an asymetrical spinaker a.k.a genaker, crusing chute, a-sym. Most symetrical spinakers around here, requiring the use of a pole are used by racers. If I'm using the wrong terminology, I apoligize. I guess in sailing there are 10 million names for the sa...

low water pressure

I agree with Ken about checking the vent. Also make sure the tank shut off valve under the kitchen sink is all the way open. If it is, unscrew the packing nut around the stem and the valve will come apart. There may be some debris stuck in that valve.

fishing pole storage

Thats great!!
My son and I were just talking about a good place to store the rods. They get in the way in the cockpit locker.
How thick was the deck there? What size screws did you use to attach the holders? I get concerned when I drill a hole in the boat for obvious reasons.
Thanks,

engine not starting

Check the batteries first. Even if they appear fully charged on the voltmeter, there may be a short which would show up under a heavy load such as starting the engine.

UK spinaker

They recommended .75 oz which I think is great for the bay. I paid around $2400 for it and that included the sock. I did pay more than usual because I wanted a very colorful chute. I did a rainbow pattern and he had to charge extra because of all the wasted materials. They try to get several panels ...

spinaker

Jack, The increase in speed is around 1.5 times the speed than if I just had the main and 135% flying. If your doing three knots- you could most likely get 4.5 knots with the chute. If I sheet it in tight and stetch the luff I can also go upwind, though not very close to the wind (maybe about 60 deg...

spinaker size

I don't have the exact dimensions but when I was pricing our spinaker, I used the catalina 36 as a starting point because the sailmaker had not made one for a 350 yet. When he made it I had to give him the cut sheet (side profile) of the boat and rigging. I found the cut sheet in the owners manual t...

Insulation

I'll tell you Jack, this is truely the number one most disturbing things about the boat. I only measured the wall thickness between the stove and freezer and when I found it only to be 2", I did get pretty hot. I did this after I had the Alder Barbour repairmen out to the boat to check my unit....

Insulation

I don't think that's too terrible for between the freezer and fridge. But if you measure the sidewall between the freezer and stove, it's only two inches. (providing that the whole cavity is filled with foam). The Adler Barbour manual requires 4'' to 6'' . That's a huge difference. This is one of th...
