Re: Oberdorfer N202M-908 Raw Water Pump Installation

I just installed the Oberdorfer pump with the enclosed install kit (N202M-837). The paper gasket and the L clamp and screws where useful, the two brass elbows included in the install kit fittings were 1/2". My boat has two different size hoses for intake and outflow, 3/4" and 7/8", so...

I just replaced the OEM Westerbeke M35B water pump on my boat with the Oberdorfer but it looks nothing like the parts number you posted.

Re: How do you mark your chain? Looking for ideas.

Red rustoleum paint every 25 feet. I use the 5:1 ratio for anchor chain to water depth so it's easy to know "Two red marks is 50 feet of chain for 10 feet of water". I also mark the first five feet of chain from the anchor with yellow paint. That way when I see yellow paint I know the anch...

Barnacles kill speed

Took the boat out Saturday and noticed after only a few hundred yards was only getting 3kts. Engine running fine, shaft turning fine. At max throttle we were getting some black smoke, 1900 rpms and almost no thrust. Went back to marina and called a diver to come out on Monday. Attachment shows barna...

Re: Macerator switch/Overboard Discharge

A simple solution may be to jam a wooden dowel up into the discharge pipe from the bottom of the boat. There is a "grossness" level to the process but it's only a few feet from the thru-hull to the bottom of the tank.

Re: Upgrade to High output alternator

When we upgraded to the Balmar alternator we had to also replace the upper support arm. The major additional expense however was in upgrading the cables (wiring) from the alternator to the batteries. When we went from a 50A standard (original) alternator to the Balmar 80A we found the cables were un...

Re: Which Anchor Chain?

We upgraded to all chain with a larger anchor before our trip to the Bahamas. What I did was take the gypsy off the windlass and went to West Marine. I then matched the chain at West Marine with the gypsy to make sure it was the proper fit to determine what I needed to order. We now have two anchors...

Re: Outhaul length

Agree with the stitching method. I suggest you also torch the two ends of the line you are attaching together to made sure the end of the line is well melted before you start stitching. I had to replace the spinnaker halyard and boy was I nervous! All I could see was the stitching giving way and the...

Re: Engine overheating

I had a higher than normal temp at speed last summer. I discovered when the boat was pulled in the spring there was a few feet of crab pot line wrapped around the shaft. That was enough to increase drag on the shaft, slow speed and an very inefficient prop. On the way down the ICW this year I would ...

Re: Bulb - LPG Solenoid

Do Catalina 350's have the ability to communicate with one another?

Last night the LPG Solenoid light on hull #59 went dim. The breaker, solenoid and stove are all working. Showing 12v at the breaker and the ground wire is fine.

Reading the posts it seems to be the lamp.

Re: Raymarine Autopilot

Mine is located in the port aft locker - upper part. When they were building my hull they must have been using a different guy. Probably the instructions were: "Install the compass in the locker back aft. Where? Anywhere you want."

Re: Raymarine Autopilot

On the B&G "No pilot" means there isn't an autopilot connected. I've seen the "no pilot" alarm in two modes; (1) I haven't turned on the autopilot, (2) the display unit isn't seeng the autopilot when it's turned on. In my case I had to replace the faulty display unit.

Re: 6 Golf Cart Batteries

Make sure the inline fuse between the battery charger and battery is the right amperage. We found out the hard way the inline fuse was undersized and blew without us knowing. We have a 40A charger and the previous inline fuse was also 40A. (You would think that's correct: 40A charger needs a 40A fus...

Re: Dinghy

I read a lot about hypalon and how it provides better protection for UV damage. I went with PVC. If we were full time cruisers in the tropics hypalon would be the better choice. We live in the Chesapeake Bay area and when the dinghy is on the davits we use the UV cover. We are heading to the Bahamas...

Re: Fuel Sending Unit

We tested our fuel sending unit by removing the sending unit from the tank and as I raised and lowered the collar from the top (full) to the bottom (empty) the Admiral would call out what the gauge was showing. The unit was fine but I realized since the tank is not square when the gauge shows 3/4 yo...

Re: Dinghy

We got a Highfield aluminum hull inflatable and it's great. 9.9hp Honda gets it up on plane with two people. We have davits for lifting since it's probably 130# with the 3gal fuel tank, battery for start, etc. Honda is another 120# so it's on a separate motor davit.

Re: Raw water pump replacement

Talk about C350's having psychic connections! Had a mechanic out yesterday to look over the engine before heading to the Bahamas next week. The Sherwood raw water needs to be rebuilt. Will be $250 vs. $500+ for a new pump. I was thinking of replacing the pump before we left Virginia in October (we a...

Re: catalina 350 shower

I replaced the hose and the shower head with one from Lowes. Everyone is right - you will need a few fittings to connect the hose/sprayer to the boat but my thought is $25 at Lowes for the hose plus fittings is the cheap easy way t go.

Re: Refrigerator top hatch

I took three steps to get better freezer / refrigeration. 1. Added additional gasket material to reduce cold air loss. 2. Placing a few 18x24 inch foam mats (available at big box stores in the kitchen aisles - usually used as floor mats) on the counter to again reduce cold air loss. 3. The biggest a...
