Re: PSS Shaft seal
When you unbolt the shaft coupling from the transmission and slide the shaft as far aft as it will go, there is approx. 5-6" of clearance to work. Hi Ken, Did you cut out the old bellows? I have the flange unbolted and slid back, but I cannot get that kind of clearance. I do not see a penalty ...

Which Anchor Chain?
It's time for new chain. The last chain I put on was 3B. It looks like there is now G4, Grade 43, High Test chain which is lighter and stronger. I'm thinking about going all chain. Has anyone upgraded their chain? This is what I am finding in my research: * Catalina 350 MkI has a Maxwell Windless VW...

Re: Fix for PSS Dripless Shaft Seal Leak
Very helpful post. This is probably be the major source of my bilge water problem. It doesn't always leak, but it has been a pronounced problem this year. I was able to use a prybar and move the collar about 1/2" away from he transmission and retighten the screws. It was resting on the transmis...

Re: What Flavor do you like?
HI, I exchanged emails with Raritan. "The manual version of the PHEII is known as the PHII. And the discharge pressure is much higher than the PHEII electric version, due to a longer stroke in the piston." - This is very helpful knowledge to me for what I am looking for. :D There is the PH...

What Flavor do you like?
HI, I'm thinking I would like to replace the toilet. Sure, I can rebuild it, but then there is the expression "Polishing a T***." I saw the pic on the PHII and PHEII. That does look like a nice retrofit. :!: With the old (Newport 1600), I have had to use a large screwdriver to break up sol...

Re: cleaning the teak companionway slats
Hi Dave, I did mine last year. Not too hard, just takes time. Of course, I researched the internet first. Mine were in really rough shape. I sanded them down to bare wood. I used a belt sander to knock them down. I found my DA sander put in swirl marks, so I stopped using that. I can't remember, but...

Re: Fixed portlight (Lewmar 7RE) acrylic replacement
There was a vendor at the Annapolis Sailboat show who specialized in selling just the acrylic replacement piece. I can't remember who it was, but I did pickup a business card. The only problem is I can't remember where I put that! Getting old sucks.

Re: Damper Replacement
I just finished installing the damper place. A couple of notes. PYI changed the part number from a 22AA4 to a 22AM4. Three months ago when I bought it, it was $225.00. I found using a reversible stubby flex head ratchet handy for running those nuts up. I never owned stubby wrenches before, but they ...

Re: Damper Replacement
Hi Al, Thanks for the quick response. Were you able to get your hands on the service manual? Did you perform the tear down and part replacement? Maybe you can start a new thread on your experiences? Pictures? It would be good to hear about it. Parts, skills, tools required. Some of these tasks are l...

Re: Damper Replacement
"Instead of a thrust bearing, Hurth uses a thrust washer. This washer wears every time the shaft goes around. It's a guaranteed failure item." I'm doing the Damper Plate repair. My boat has all the symptoms. While the transmission is out, it this thrust washer replacement a reasonable main...

Schaeffer 2100
Last year I let the cage fall off the furler into the Chesapeake Bay. I figured it would cost $100 bucks to replace. I'm learning that is a $500 mistake. The part number I am looking for is 45-236-A. I need two pieces. They do not need to be brand new as the furler is 12 years old. Is there a "...

Self-Priming my . . .
Usually, I fill the fuel filters after changing them. This time, I wanted to see if the "Self-Priming" feature worked. I turned on the ignition for at least a minute then cranked on a dry engine fuel filter for at least 30 seconds and not a drop in the filter. I cannot find anything in the...

There could be other leaks since I have water in the blidge after sitting on the hard for months, but this did make a difference. It was easy and cost penies.

Re: Blue Boot Stripe
Thanks.
I was cleaning the hull over the weekend. There is some dirt and some mild oxidation. I just purchased the 3M rubbing compund the the Perfect it polish. I'll try that first. If that does not work I'll wet sand it.

Blue Boot Stripe
My blue boot stripe has oxidized and faded over the years. I'd like to redo it while the boat is on the hard. I'm not sure what the best solution to restore it. I'd like to know what it is. Is it colored gel coat? Decal? Paint? Has anyone restored one?

Feathering Props
I'm very interested in a new prop. Mostly for backing this big fat pig into my slip. I just finished reading an informative 27 page, 398 post thread on propellers. I definitely want a feathering prop that can rotate their blades around 180 degrees so the leading edge is presented in reverse....

Time for a Barrier Coat?
My hull is coming up on 10 years. I was told by a marine yard guy that the hull should be sand blasted and barrier coated every 7 years with 5 - 7 coats of epoxy paint. Is everyone doing, done, going to do this? I do not want to sand off anything that was put on better by the factory than I can put ...

BEEP . . . BEEP . . . BEEP . . . Hear that? That is the back-up warning indicator. I probably wasn't as clear on how I got to the check valve issue. I'm going to elaborate in detail. I do not profess to be an expert on this. If I thought I was smart, it would not have taken me 10 years to figure thi...
